Core Drawing Practicum with Geoff Flack

The Core Drawing Practicum is offered to students who are looking for a more focused drawing practice, beyond just the Core Drawing and accompanying drawing classes. This program is for student artists who cannot fit in a full-time atelier program but want to expand upon their foundational training with focused guidance. The Core Drawing Practicum is an in-person, mentored program that will help students develop their private studio practice around meaningful projects, with a schedule that fits their everyday lives.

Rational

A ten-week studio art class is certainly enlightening but will sometimes feel like one is just scratching the surface to developing the skills and techniques desired. On top of that, figuring out what to do with the lessons learned from any art class is a challenge and seem like a difficult endeavor to realize and develop the tools for a self-guided studio practice.

Goals & Intent

  • To further solidify and expand upon one’s foundational training in drawing
  • Develop a portfolio of drawings relating to a personal project/s with critical feedback
  • To build a community of artists looking for critical discourse, instructor mentorship, and peer to peer feedback
  • Provide a supportive environment to foster a meaningful studio practice
*This practicum is set up to coincide with the Core Drawing classes (or as an option to those who have completed the Core Drawing class track) to optimize the student’s drawing education

Fee Structure

  • All levels welcome!
  • $2,000/academic year

Practicals

  • Working from a home studio space/corner/kitchen table, and with the guidance of your instructor, students will create a personal studio schedule (*instructor will provide a short list of studio equipment essentials)
  • Demonstrations on assignments and exercises to jumpstart and nourish studio projects
  • Meet weekly in person in Southlake Union, for 3 hours, Wednesday afternoons, for critical feedback, demonstration and/or lecture
  • Parallels with the 10 week continuing ed calendar

Advanced Drawing Seminar with Geoff Flack

    Intent

To build a community of artists working predominantly in the media of drawing, with an emphasis on the human figure, who are looking for critical discourse, instructor mentorship, and peer to peer feedback.

    Rationale

Establishing a studio practice after completing the rigors of an art education can be a difficult and isolating endeavor. Day to day life distractions can easily take over a postgraduate’s studio practice, and without the structure of a program, can leave them feeling a bit lost. And, as you know, to hire a model with any sort of regularity is financially straining and logistically difficult to maintain.

    Goal

To offer mentored sessions and continued liferoom practice. These sessions include critical feedback of figurative work and personal projects. The goal is to offer postgraduate students a supportive community through group discussions and mentorship to help progress and support their studio practice.

    Schedule

    • Tuesday 1:30pm-8:30pm - Critical discussion/feedback, demonstrations, presentations, AD Seminar Uninstructed Liferoom Session
    • Break from 4:30pm-5:30pm - Dinner

    Outcome

    • Create and execute personal project/s with intent to present work in group show/s.
    • Continue to build portfolio of figurative work from life.
    • Take part in Atelier events, field trips, etc.

    Fee Structure

     $825/quarter ($2,475/academic year)

    Practicals

    • 3 hours of model time/week
    • 3 hours in-person crits/week
    • Year-end exhibition devoted to work created while in the semin

    Atelier Primer with Riley Doyle

    Zoom Meeting

Monday and Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6:30pm-9:30pm. $960/quarter.

    Purpose

The Atelier Primer is a part-time program modeled after a traditional, full-time Atelier’s curriculum. It is a compressed sampling of the foundations introduced in the traditional 3 year atelier trajectory. Each 10 week term of this program builds off of the previous term and the program as a whole is encouraged to be taken many times over to continue to build momentum and skills without having to start at the beginning every time. This exciting program will teach the classical foundations of drawing and painting representationally. Whether you’re a beginner interested in learning the techniques of observational drawing and painting, or you are an intermediate/advanced student who wants to improve or keep your skills sharp, the Atelier Primer is perfect for you.

This online, evening class is ideal for those who cannot attend classes during the day. Our Monday and Wednesday class time will consist of assignment reviews/critiques from the instructor, as well as in-real-time demos. There is also built-in work time during the class meeting time windows, so you can receive feedback and check-ins as you work through the assignments. Led by instructor Riley Doyle, alumni and previous instructor of the full time Georgetown Atelier, the Atelier Primer is comprised of hands-on demos, pre-recorded demos, foundational skill building assignments and individual critiques. Each academic term of the Atelier Primer represents a different core medium of this traditional academic approach.

    Schedule

    • The FALL TERM focuses on drawing and is the primary foundation laying term, where key concepts and techniques will be introduced and will be carried into all future study and practice.
    • The WINTER TERM focuses on monochromatic oil painting. It will reinforce all skills introduced in the previous term and add on the complexities of handling the medium of oil paint.
    • The SPRING TERM focuses on limited palette oil painting. Once again building off of the previous term, we will take what we’ve learned from the previous two terms and add on the complexities of seeing and recording color information.

NOTE: It is highly recommended that anyone new to the Atelier Primer program begins in the Fall term.

    Landscape Practicum with Riley Doyle

    Goals

In this practicum you will join the full-time Contemporary Landscape Atelier Students on their scheduled plein air field days, happening every other week on Thursdays.

    Fee structure

    $2280 a year

    What to Expect

Demos, critiques and instructions will be given in every session, along with guidance and direction for the day's focus. The locations will be determined at the instructor's discretion but will be within King County. Plein air field days will be held rain or shine, unless the weather is severe. Locations and subject matter will range from wide-open spaces to urban scenes.

This practicum is intended to provide thorough and consistent training and direction in plein air painting practices throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for practicum students to join the full-time Atelier students in the field to build community and skills.

This practicum serves to be a resource to those wanting to improve their plein air practice but cannot make the time commitment necessary for the full-time program. It is also a great resource for figurative, still life, or general studio artists to get consistent cross training.

    Schedule

    • 9:30am - 4:30pm, every other Thursday (5- sessions per quarter, 15 total)
    • Fall Session Dates: 9/12, 9/26, 10/10, 10/24, 11/7
