Throughout this course, you'll delve into the rich tradition of portrait painting, honing your skills in color mixing, brushwork, and composition. Under the guidance of the instructor, you'll acquire strategies for organizing visual information and then translating that to the canvas. With the dynamic presence of a live model, you'll explore the interplay of light and shadow, bringing depth and vitality to your portraits. This class provides a supportive environment to develop your artistic voice and master the timeless art of portraiture.
Required Supplies
Artist Grade Oil Paints:
• Flake White (If you prefer not to use a lead white, a mixed white is recommended)
• Yellow Ochre Light (Old Holland)
• Burnt Sienna
• Cadmium Red Light (Gamblin)
• Light Red (Winsor Newton)
• Alizarin Crimson
• Kings Blue
• Ultramarine Blue
• Ivory Black
• Cadmium Green Light
• Raw Umber (Winsor Newton)
* Unless called out any brand will do. Preferably no student grade oil paints such as Gamblin “1980” , Winsor Newton “Winton”, Blick Studio Oil Colors or Grumbacher Academy Oil colors.
Supports:
• 2 - 11”x 14” Canvas panels or stretched canvas toned with a neutral gray ground
• 11” x 14” or 12” x 16” canvas pad (for optional homework).
Brushes: You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with, but in case you need to purchase some here is what I suggest to start with.
• 1 each of #2, 4, 6, & 8 filbert bristle brushes
• 1 each of #2, 4 & 6 filbert synthetic brushes
• 1 each of #4 or #6 round synthetic*
* A very good round is the #4 Escoda Modernisia
Other Materials:
• Sketch pad and pencil for thumbnail studies and notes
• Palette (glass or wooden, be sure the wooden palette is sealed such as a New Wave palette)
• Maul Stick (optional but very handy)
• 2 trowel shaped palette knifes (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
• Clean absorbent rags (very important)
• Paper towels
• Refined Linseed oil
• OMS – Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamsol is preferred)
• 1 jar with lid for solvent
• 1 small jar with lid for medium
• 3 – 2” Spring clamps
• Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal (optional to store and transport a wet palette)
