Instruction Medium: Graphite

This is an introductory class that helps students acquire and develop fundamental drawing skills. The class emphasizes traditional drawing techniques including line, value, composition and linear perspective. Students will work on still life and figures from observation and communicate ideas through a variety of black and white media. 

In this class, students will learn:
• basic observation methods and skills
• basic drawing elements: line, shape
• perspectives and space relationships form, mass, texture, value & volume
• composition and space arrangement
• proportional relationships and measurements

Required Supplies

  • 18X24 Sketch Paper, Such as Biggie Sketch by Canson or Dick Blick Brand Sketch Paper
  • 9x12 sketchbook
  • Graphite pencils- 2H, H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • White Vinyl Eraser or pink pearl Art gum eraser
  • Small click eraser
  • ?” diameter eraser
  • Metal pencil sharpener
  • Box cutter
  • Sandpaper
  • Medium vine charcoal
  • small box Chamois or soft rag
  • BBQ Skewer or thin knitting needle for measuring
  • Soft clean paintbrush 1-2” ish (just to dust off eraser crumbs and charcoal dust)

  • Drafting tape
