Instruction Medium: Graphite or charcoal

Do you like drawings with strong contrast using rich blacks? 
Techniques on gradation of darker values, layering, burnishing, working with edges, texture, and line quality using either charcoal pencils or graphite pencils will add impact to your drawings. Discussion of different graphite pencil brands, paper surfaces.  Subjects will include realism, abstraction, landscape, still life, and figurative. Examples from Masters to contemporary artists will be reviewed. Photo references provided each week.

Required Supplies

  • Sketchbook
  • Erasers – white plastic, kneaded,
  • Charcoal pencils H M S
  • Blending stumps
  • Pencils: Any - Mars Stadtler Lumograph black, Tombow, Faber Castel Pitt Matte black  *The instructor will use MSL Black and FCPM Black*

      Optional:

      • Factus and Tombow pencil erasers
      • Stonehenge, Charcoal or textured paper
