Spring Flowers in Colored Pencil
Bring vibrancy and the brilliance of colored pencils to your botanical art. With layering, blending, burnishing, and pressure control you will develop confidence and learn basic color theory. Washing with a solvent and watercolor pencils will be demonstrated. Exercises include a variety of flowers, fruits and plants. Color pencil history, brands and papers will be discussed. Demonstrations, handouts, and photos provided weekly.
Week 1: Color, Pressure and Layering
Exercises in color theory, pressure, and layering techniques.
Creating reference charts. Basic flower forms.
Week 2: Simple Flowers and Forms
Introducing watercolor pencils and/or oil-based pencils
Blending and layering options, warm and cool under painting to show value transitions.
Week 3: Complex Floral Composition
Composition layouts with multiple flowers.
Week 4: From Seed/Bulb to Bloom
Watercolor pencils and washing techniques.
Weeks 5: Creating reference charts of basic flower forms
Required Supplies
- Paper
Strathmore Bristol 300 or 400 vellum surface paper (this has more tooth, take a little more time to cover paper texture, but takes multiple, heavy layering)
Instructor will use Stonehenge legion white 9 x 12 (some texture)
- Sketchbook
- Colored Pencils
Brands: At least 24 – 36 count Prismacolor Premier Pencil Soft Core
Derwent Studio, Faber Castel Polychromos
(Stay away from student grade pencils if possible – they can work but not as well)
- Blender – colorless pencil
- Optional: 12 Watercolor pencil set Erasers
