Advanced Drawing Practicum with Geoff Flack

Intent

To build a community of artists working predominantly in the media of drawing, with an emphasis on the human figure, who are looking for critical discourse, instructor mentorship, and peer to peer feedback.

Rationale

Establishing a studio practice after completing the rigors of an art education can be a difficult and isolating endeavor. Day to day life distractions can easily take over a postgraduate’s studio practice, and without the structure of a program, can leave them feeling a bit lost. And, as you know, to hire a model with any sort of regularity is financially straining and logistically difficult to maintain.

Goal

To offer mentored sessions and continued liferoom practice. These sessions include critical feedback of figurative work and personal projects. The goal is to offer postgraduate students a supportive community through group discussions and mentorship to help progress and support their studio practice.

Schedule

• Tuesday 1:30pm-8:30pm - Critical discussion/feedback, demonstrations, presentations, uninstructed Liferoom session
• Break from 4:30pm-5:30pm - Dinner
• 2026 - 2027 Quarter Dates:

  • Spring: 4/6/27 - 6/8/27

Outcome

• Create and execute personal project/s with intent to present work in group show/s.
• Continue to build portfolio of figurative work from life.
• Take part in Atelier events, field trips, etc.

Practicals

• 3 hours of model time/week
• 3 hours in-person crits/week
• Year-end exhibition devoted to work created while in the seminar

Online Sculpture Practicum with Mike Magrath

Intent

The Sculpture Practicum offers a supportive, virtual community and artistic mentorship for aspiring, distant, and postgraduate students who for whatever reason are unable to participate in person classes, but who wish to build skills, develop independent work, and sustain their ongoing studio practice. The Practicum provides members weekly check-in and individual critiques with an advanced instructor, assignments as appropriate, an opportunity to give feedback on and learn from the processes of fellow members, and incentive to continue and expand their personal studio practice. In addition to critiques, the practicum periodically considers and discusses the work of outside artists, readings on artistic theory and technique as well as artistic vision and inspiration.   

Making art is hard enough, doing so without community support can be at times overwhelming. A healthy artistic practice is best sustained by a caring and creative community of supportive fellow artists. The practicum aspires to be that community for its members. It turns out, there is an effective way to teach sculpture over zoom. If interested, you are welcome to drop in and see how we do it

• Support all students in skill-building, whether they are beginners starting with foundational projects or advanced students working on independent projects.
• Examine and discuss historical and contemporary artistic questions and concerns especially as related to figurative sculpture.

Practicals

• Class Structure
  • 3 hours of live critiques and discussions weekly.
  • Instruction and demonstrations provided both live and asynchronously.
  • Individual critiques and discussions where all students can participate or observe.
• BEGINNERS: Assignments and instruction on foundational projects like Bargue drawings and cast copies, ideal for those aiming to enter the Sculpture Atelier.
• INTERMEDIATE: Demonstrations and assignments on projects such as drapery, maquette work, and working with virtual models.
• ADVANCED: Work on personal projects with the option to request assistance in developing their work.
• All Practicum students have access to the same core content as regular atelier students, including a vast resource library, lectures, exhibition opportunities and discounts.
