Core Figure: Approaches to the Lay-In is the first course in Gage's new Core Figure Pathway, a series of classes designed to build a strong foundation for studying and drawing the human figure. Building on the skills introduced in Core Drawing, the pathway develops students' understanding of the figure through observation, construction, and structural thinking. In this foundational course, designed for both beginning and continuing students, we'll explore three complementary approaches to beginning a figure drawing—gestural, optical, and constructive—and discover how each offers a different lens through which to understand and organize the human figure. Rather than treating these as competing methods, we'll consider the unique strengths, limitations, and purposes of each, learning when and why one approach may be more useful than another.

Using these different approaches, we'll explore topics such as:

  • observation, interpretation, and design
  • proportional canons, comparative measurement, and the general model
  • shape analysis and synthetic forms
  • the silhouette and the line of action
  • dynamic balance and opposing rhythms

Along the way, students will learn to simplify the complexity of the figure, organize forms from the general to the specific, and think in terms of relationships rather than isolated parts. By the end of the course, students will have a flexible framework for beginning figure drawings with greater clarity, confidence, and intention, while laying the groundwork for subsequent Core Figure courses, including Figure Construction and Structural Anatomy.
