Create Pop-up Art
Edie Everette
$430
Many visual artists have elevated the medium of three-dimensional mechanical paper structures into the world of fine art, bookmaking, and kinetic sculpture. From Colette Fu's 3D replica of an abandoned mental hospital to Robert Sabuda's 3D illustrations for Alice in Wonderland, such sculptures and books can create a simple magic. This technique can include interactive levers that create action, along with removable and alternate parts to compose with. Think of childhood paper dolls with various clothing and accessories. Each week this class includes inspirational slide shows, technique exercises, longer assignments and encouraging class critiques. Both optional homework and show-and-tell will be included.
Required Supplies
Bring thick papers that stand up and any mediums you may wish - paints, markers, collage materials, pencils. For cutting out shapes, I use small and inexpensive snap blade utility knives -- they always have a fresh edge because when the blade gets dull, you simply snap off the tip for a razor-sharp cutting edge. Nothing is more discouraging than a dull blade for these projects! I use the back of drawing pads to cut paper on, so if not a tablet please bring a cutting surface. Glue, tape and scissors will also be helpful.
