Strip color out of the equation, and what’s left is pure form. This workshop uses a single-color palette, one color with the addition of white and black, to slow down and focus on value, edge, and gesture before color complicates the picture — a great entry point for artists new to encaustic, and a chance for seasoned painters to refocus on fundamentals. Encaustic (pigmented beeswax and damar resin, worked hot) rewards artists who like to move fast and change their mind: paint goes on, gets scraped back, gets reworked. Students bring their own photo references to paint from. We’ll cover: * Heated palette basics * Layering and scraping technique * Painting on panel with discussion of other surfaces * Combining drawing materials with encaustic * Fusing with heat gun and torch
