Learn how to paint portrait in oils in this beginner friendly class. Students should look forward to learning general oil painting safety and handling as well as initial basic approaches and techniques when applying oils to portrait painting.

Required Supplies

You’re welcome to order these supplies online, but if you have the time, it’s recommended to visit your local art store instead. This gives you a chance to explore the variety of materials available and compare items in person.. ArtSpot Edmonds and Artist & Craftsman Supply are great places. Blick is also a good alternative. Oil Paint (one 4oz tube or smaller of each color): *Be cautious not to get water soluble oil paint! Ivory Black Red Transparent Oxide Burnt Sienna Raw Umber Titanium White Alizarin Crimson Viridian Green Ultramarine Blue King's Blue Light Naples Yellow Yellow Ochre Cadmium Yellow Med Cadmium Orange Cadmium Red Medium A container to wash paints in (any container that can double as a brush cleaning and solvent storage is good—a glass jar is ok too!) A container for linseed oil (a glass jar is ok too!) Canvas panels (Suggestion: 4x6 (2), 8x10 (2), 9x12 (2)) Canvas paper (Optional) Paintbrushes (there are many options—you can always ask your local art store to help you put together a set that fits your budget, but you will want an assortment of sizes and styles of synthetic or mongoose brushes in filbert, flat, and round.
