Sumi Painting: Fall Bounty
Experience the flowing techniques of Japanese sumi painting. Sumi (ink) will be the primary medium used to express a variety of subjects associated with fall - flowers, vegetables, fruit, landscape. Traditional tools and materials as well as basic brushwork will be covered. Students will be encouraged to express their individual interpretation of subjects.
Required Supplies
1. BRUSH “Super White Cloud” brush and/or Large Orchid Bamboo brush (sources: Paragon Art; Oriental Art Supplies; Blue Heron Arts)
2. RICE PAPER Best Shuan (also referred to as Single Xuan; 2 rolls or 10 full size sheets) or Jin Pi (2 rolls or 10 full size sheets) or Yasutomo Sumi-e Sketch Paper (12”x18” pad of Kozo paper, not Hosho paper) (sources: Paragon Art; Oriental Art Supplies; Blue Heron Arts; Artist & Craftsman; Dick Blick)
3. INK (sumi), liquid - Note: Do not get the Yasutomo Sumi in the green bottle (Sources: Artist & Craftsman; Dick Blick; Oriental Art Supplies; Blue Heron Arts)
4. FELT White or off white felt. Suggested size: at least 18” x 24” (Sources: Oriental Art Supply; Blue Heron Arts; fabric stores)
5. PAPER WEIGHT Steel bars (1 or 2) or 2-3 rocks (low and flat) or, eg, dinner knife (1 or 2)
6. Water containers 3, eg, 12-16 oz plastic containers with smooth edges
7. Containers to hold ink 2, eg, small lids or other shallow container
8. White saucer (to serve as a palette)
9. Towel or rag (eg, size of a face towel)
10. Sumi watercolors - Optional: will discuss during class
