Join the Board of Directors

Gage Academy of Art is seeking thoughtful leaders who believe in the power of art to change lives. If you care about creative community and accessible arts education in Seattle and are interested in volunteer board service, we’d love to meet you.

Art invites conversation. People take in the work at Gage's South Lake Union campus.
People gather in Gage’s gallery space during an open event.

Serving on the Gage board means being part of something that genuinely matters - to students, to artists, and to Seattle's creative community. It's also a chance to work alongside people who bring real curiosity and commitment to everything they do.

About the Gage Board of Trustees

  • Gage stands at an exciting moment. In July 2024 we moved to our new campus in South Lake Union and expanded our Atelier offerings at our Georgetown location. As interest in in-person arts education continues to grow, Gage is expanding its reach, partnering with schools to bring art to underserved communities, deepening its programming, and strengthening its role as a key institution in the development of Seattle’s visual artists.

  • We are seeking new board members in 2026–2027 — thoughtful, engaged leaders who care deeply about the arts and believe in their transformative power for individuals and communities.

What We're Looking For

Gage board members are people who:

  • Believe in the power of arts education to change lives
  • Care about building an inclusive, accessible creative community in Seattle
  • Are curious, collaborative, and willing to contribute
  • Bring perspectives shaped by a range of lived experiences and identities
  • Are invested in Gage's long-term growth and sustainability
Skills We're Seeking

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:

  • Nonprofit board governance, operations, and best practices
  • Corporate or foundation philanthropy, or strong connections in those sectors
  • K–12 education, youth development, or arts education
  • Art collecting or deep involvement in the arts world
  • Business leadership, strategic planning, or community networks
  • Marketing or community partnerships
Board Member Responsibilites

Board members are active, engaged partners in Gage's work. Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • Champion Gage’s mission and serve as ambassadors in the community
  • Take an active role in fundraising — cultivating, stewarding, and acknowledging donors throughout the year
  • Provide strategic leadership and support long-term organizational planning
  • Ensure organizational health through fiduciary oversight and governance
  • Make a personally meaningful annual gift to Gage
  • Participate actively in board meetings, committees, and major events
  • Engage with the Executive Director and leadership team to strengthen Gage’s impact
Time Commitment

Serving on the Gage board is a commitment — and a manageable one. Most members:

  • Spend 3-5 hours per month preparing for and participating in board and committee meetings (varies by committee)
  • Regularly attend Gage events, such as the annual Gala, Drawing Jam, Best of Gage, and student exhibitions

Those who take on officer roles or committee leadership or volunteer to support the organization naturally invest more time — and many find that rewarding.

Financial Commitment
Board members commit to strengthening Gage financially by opening doors, strengthening community and corporate relationships, helping cultivate donors, and supporting events that connect people more directly to Gage’s mission. Board members make Gage their major philanthropic priority and are encouraged to give at a level that is significant and meaningful for them.
